Horses Out!

Horses & Winter

Horses & WinterI got a frantic phone call just a little while from my Mom. Apparently one of my horses was out. Not sure about the why or how exactly. My folks had managed to get him back with the lure of some grain, which mind you, he does not need at all. We had a conversation about the fence and the charger. Apparently it is not working at all. I am not sure at this point what the problem is exactly. I suggest a fresh set of batteries, as it is wireless – in a different sense if you get my drift.

It has been a couple of hours now but I just got another one of those calls. This one not as frantic, but with the same message generally speaking. Jack is out of the paddock and I am going to have to do something in the morning about the situation and figure out what is going on with the fence. I am so in concurrence on this, but I have to wonder just exactly what has gotten his feathers up all the sudden. And apparently, he is going through the fence with taking the whole thing down – but just knocking one strand off or something.

More Agriculture Catching Up

Grain Closeup

Grain CloseupOnce again I have been more than a week or two with getting a post on here. The holidays got kind of crazy and the work schedule did not help that picture any at all. Anyway, in an effort to get caught up once again I thought I would catch a few topics that have caught my attention once again in a bulleted post or two, given each subject a little bit shorter attention then I would normally give to it. Topics I plan to touch on include composting animal carcasses, horse slaughter – again, raw milk, grain price trends, and fuel costs. I may of course hit something else in there as well, but at least those will get some attention.

Oh, and one other quick little thing. I am participating in a weekly blog post challenge for the year of 2011 here on Traveller’s Haven Farms. No big prizes or anything, to win means the satisfaction of accomplishing the goal and nothing more. If you have your own blog I would encourage you do the same to get more consistent with posts and such. You can read other participants by following the hash tag #postaweek2011 or #postaday2011 for those doing similar on a daily basis. On to the short discussions…

Horse Trailer

trailer

trailerA couple of months ago I purchased a horse trailer. Been a long while since I have had one in my possession. What a different kind of feeling it has made. Kind of hard to explain if you are not a farm/rancher type, but I am going to try to just a bit… but first a bit of background is order.

Horse Market

down_graph

down_graphA few weeks back as I will sometimes to just for an afternoon of fun and entertainment I went to the local horse auction. A few clarifications are in order there to begin. First, I was only casually looking, having a half a thought depending on prices and such of maybe sometime in the very near future pursuit of a draft cross for jousting. The local sale is not really all that local, but at about an hour away it is not bad of a drive.

Farrier Freedom

Farrier

FarrierAs an aside, the word farrier is in the spell checker I am now using and is recognized as an acceptable word. You realize I have been using that word in various documents since at least around 2000, maybe slightly longer and none, not even the Microsoft Word dictionary, has contained that word. So my hats off to the folks doing this open source dictionary that I am using.
